Frase for AI Search (2026): What It Does for AI Overviews and ChatGPT Citations, and What It Can't
Buy Frase Starter ($39/mo billed yearly, $49 monthly) if search is how you make money and you want one seat that writes and audits pages and shows whether ChatGPT and Google's AI answers cite you for the questions your buyers ask. It does not make AI engines cite you, and Google says AI Overviews need nothing beyond normal SEO. Skip it if you publish less than a few pages a month or your traffic comes from YouTube and social; check a handful of prompts by hand for free instead.
"AI search" means three different places a buyer can meet your page without clicking a blue link: Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT answers with sources, and engines like Perplexity. Vendors now sell "GEO" (generative engine optimization) as a new discipline. This memo is about one narrow question: is Frase worth paying for if getting cited in those answers is part of why you write? Background reading: Frase pricing and Frase vs Surfer.
Start with what Google actually says
Before you buy any AI-search tool, read Google's own AI features guidance (checked Oct 9, 2026). The short version:
- There are no additional requirements and no special optimizations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
- To be shown as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet.
- You don't need llms.txt-style files, AI text files, or special schema for Google's AI features.
- Traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is counted inside Search Console's normal Performance report.
So for Google, "AI search optimization" is regular SEO done well: indexed pages, internal links, clear answers, and structured data that matches what readers see. ChatGPT and Perplexity have their own retrieval, but the same basics apply. A tool earns its fee by making that work faster and by measuring where you show up. It does not unlock a hidden channel.
What Frase sells for AI search
- AI Visibility: you list the questions buyers ask (Frase's example: "best telehealth platform"), and Frase checks daily whether AI engines cite you, with alerts. It monitors; it does not edit your pages.
- SEO and GEO scores: drafts and existing pages get a search score and a generative-engine score in the editor, so you see what to fix first.
- Audits and Content Guard: audit pages each month, and Content Guard watches pages for Google rank and traffic decay, proposes a rewrite, and republishes on your approval.
- AI crawler monitoring (Professional and up): whether AI crawlers are reaching your pages.
- MCP server and CLI on every plan: run Frase from Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, or a terminal.
- Honest limit: we did not run a before-and-after citation test, and we do not claim one. This is a buying map from Frase's published plans plus Google's documentation.
Which plan covers which AI engines

Starter is the honest default for a creator site. Fifty prompts is enough to track the questions that actually lead to a purchase in your niche. Starter stops at its limits instead of billing overages. The real gaps are Perplexity (Professional) and the short history: if you want to show a client six months of citation trend, Starter will not do it.
See Frase's plansA four-week AI-search workflow with Frase
- Pick 20–50 buyer prompts. Not "what is X" but "best X for Y under $Z", "X vs Y", "is X worth it." Those are the answers that send buyers.
- Get a baseline. Load them into AI Visibility (or run Frase's free AI visibility checker first). Note who gets cited instead of you.
- Fix pages before writing new ones. Run audits on the pages that should win those prompts. Put a direct, dated answer near the top, add the comparison table the cited competitor has, and link to the page from your hubs.
- Write only the gaps. Brief and draft pages for prompts where you have nothing. One page per buyer question.
- Check indexing. Confirm in Search Console that the pages are indexed. An unindexed page cannot be cited in Google's AI features.
- Review weekly, judge monthly. Citations move slowly. Frase itself says rankings and AI citations build over weeks after you publish, and it will not promise one inside a trial.
Honest limits
- It measures; it does not decide. AI engines choose sources. No plan buys a citation.
- Answers vary. The same prompt can cite different sources by day, location, and account. Treat tracking as trend data, not a scoreboard.
- Indexing comes first. A new or relaunched site with pages Google hasn't indexed will see little in AI Visibility. Fix crawling and internal links first.
- Starter's engine list is short. ChatGPT and Google AI only. If your buyers live in Perplexity, that is Professional.
- The "GEO score" is Frase's model. Use it as a checklist, not as proof that a page will be cited.
- The writing loop is the real value. If you only want a citation report, a visibility-only tool or a weekly manual check is cheaper.
Cheaper or different paths
| Your situation | Do this instead |
|---|---|
| Fewer than ~4 pages a month | Search Console + run your top 10 prompts in ChatGPT and Perplexity weekly; log citations in a sheet. $0. |
| You only want AI citation tracking, no writing tools | Surfer's AI Search Analytics plan, $82/mo billed yearly, 50 prompts refreshed daily (surferseo.com/pricing, no commission). Costs more than Frase Starter. |
| Big content team, enterprise budget | Clearscope Essentials, $129/mo, includes ChatGPT and Gemini query tracking (clearscope.io/pricing, no commission). |
| Drafting is the bottleneck, not research | ChatGPT vs Frase for briefs — stay on chat until briefs fail. |
Final recommendation
- Search pays your bills and you publish several pages a month → Frase Starter, yearly
- Buyers use Perplexity, or you manage 2–5 sites → Professional
- Agency tracking Claude and Gemini across many clients → Scale
- Visibility report only → Surfer AI Search Analytics or a manual weekly check
- Pages not indexed yet → fix indexing before buying anything

How we put this together
Frase plan details come from frase.io/pricing and its plan comparison table, read Oct 9, 2026 CT. Google's position comes from its Search Central page on AI features, read the same day. Surfer and Clearscope prices were read from their pricing pages the same day for the alternatives table only. We did not run a citation experiment and do not claim one. Confirm prices on the vendor page before you buy.
Frequently asked questions
Can Frase get my content cited in Google AI Overviews or ChatGPT?
No tool can guarantee a citation. Frase helps with the parts you control: it tracks which AI answers cite you for prompts you choose, scores drafts for SEO and GEO, audits existing pages, and flags pages losing Google traffic. Google says there are no special requirements for AI Overviews beyond normal SEO, so Frase is a workflow and measurement seat, not a shortcut.
Which Frase plan do I need for AI search?
Checked Oct 9, 2026 on frase.io/pricing: Starter ($39/mo billed yearly, $49 monthly) tracks 50 AI Visibility prompts on ChatGPT and Google AI. Professional ($103/mo yearly, $129 monthly) adds Perplexity, AI crawler monitoring, and 200 prompts. Scale ($239/mo yearly, $299 monthly) adds Claude and Gemini and 500 prompts. Most solo creators should start on Starter.
Does Frase AI Visibility fix my pages automatically?
No. Frase's pricing page says AI Visibility monitors and alerts, and does not auto-fix. Content Guard is the separate feature that proposes fixes for pages losing Google rank or traffic, and it republishes only after you approve unless you opt in.
Do I need llms.txt or special schema to show up in AI Overviews?
Google's Search Central guidance says no: you don't need new machine-readable files, AI text files, or special schema to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. The page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet. Frase's own CMS adds llms.txt, which may help other AI tools read your pages, but it is not a Google requirement.
Is there a free way to check AI visibility before paying?
Yes. Frase has a free AI visibility checker on its site, and you can run your top buyer questions in ChatGPT and Perplexity by hand each week and log who gets cited. Pay for Frase when tracking 20+ prompts by hand eats more than an hour a week or you also need briefs and audits.
Frase or Surfer for AI visibility?
Frase if you want the writing, audit, and tracking loop in one seat from $39/mo billed yearly. Surfer's AI Search Analytics plan ($82/mo billed yearly, 50 prompts refreshed daily) is a visibility-first alternative. We earn from Frase, not Surfer. Buy one.
