Which AI Tool Should You Buy? Start With the Job, Not the Tool (2026)
Name the one job that eats your week, buy one tool for it, and skip the rest until it pays off. Edit long video or podcasts → Descript. Turn long video into Shorts → Opus Clip or Vizard. Add a voice without recording → ElevenLabs (or Murf for slide lessons). Write for search → Frase. Make an avatar or course video → Synthesia. If none of those is a weekly job yet, the right buy is nothing.
Most "best AI tools" lists hand you twelve logos and no decision. This page does the opposite. Find your job below, read who should buy and who should skip, then go to the deeper guide if you want the plan math. Every price here is a published-plan snapshot from our Sep 28, 2026 check, not a promise. Vendors move prices, so confirm on their page before you pay.

|---|---|---|---|
| Edit video or a podcast | Descript | Hobbyist ~$16/mo annual | You only cut Shorts from finished masters |

Job: "I need to edit video or a podcast"
Buy Descript if you ship long-form video or podcast episodes most weeks and the slow part is cutting: ums, dead air, retakes, rough audio. You edit by editing the transcript, which is the fastest way most non-editors get a clean master. Hobbyist is ~$16/mo annual for 10 media hours; Creator is ~$24/mo annual for 30 hours. Start on Hobbyist and only move up when you actually run out of hours.
Skip Descript if your output is mostly short vertical clips you shoot and post the same day. A free timeline editor like CapCut (no partner link) covers that, and paying for transcript editing you never use is waste.

Job: "I need Shorts and Reels from my long videos"
Buy one clipper, not two. Opus Clip and Vizard both take a webinar, podcast, or YouTube video and return ranked short clips with captions. On our Sep 28 check both list ~$14.50/mo on annual billing.
- Pick Opus Clip if you want to try paid clipping month to month first: its Starter plan is $15/mo with no annual commitment.
- Pick Vizard if volume is the point: its Creator plan publishes a higher starting credit floor (from ~600 credits a month, versus ~300 on Opus Clip Pro).
Skip both if you post fewer than two or three clips a week. The free tiers (watermarked) are enough to learn whether clips move your numbers before you pay.

Job: "I need a voice without recording myself"
Buy ElevenLabs for narration, faceless channels, ad reads, podcast cold opens, and voice cloning. Starter is ~$5/mo annual ($6 monthly) with commercial rights and instant cloning; Creator (~$18–$22/mo) only when you need Professional Voice Cloning or more credits.
Buy Murf instead if the job is slide-based lessons, training, or presentations, where a studio timeline, pronunciation control, and Canva support matter more than the most natural cold read. Creator is ~$19/mo annual.
Skip both if your audience comes for your actual voice. A $100 mic beats any voice subscription for a personality podcast. And do not pay for ElevenLabs and Murf at once.

Job: "I need to write content that ranks"
Buy Frase if search traffic is how you make money and you publish several posts a month. It gives you SERP-backed briefs before you write and content-decay audits after. Starter is ~$39/mo annual for one seat and one site.
Skip Frase if you publish once a month or your buyers come from YouTube, newsletters, or social. Draft in ChatGPT (free or Plus) and spend the money elsewhere. Surfer is the other common pick here; we only have a plain Surfer pricing link (no partner link). Do not buy both.

Job: "I need to check AI-assisted text before it goes live"
Buy Originality.ai Pro (~$12.95/mo annual, 2,000 credits a month) if you publish AI-assisted copy on client sites, sell writing, or work with editors who check for AI flags. It also covers plagiarism checks.
Skip it if you write everything yourself and nobody downstream asks. The free tier's limited daily AI checks are enough to spot-check.

Job: "I need an avatar video or a course lesson without filming"
Buy Synthesia if you turn scripts into training modules, onboarding videos, product explainers, or multi-language lessons and you do not have reliable camera days. Starter is ~$14/mo annual, but note the video allotment: about 120 minutes a year. A two-hour course uses all of it. Creator (~$59/mo annual) lifts that to about 360 minutes a year.
Skip it if people buy from you because of you. An avatar weakens a personality brand. Film yourself, edit in Descript, and keep the money. HeyGen is the other common avatar pick (no partner link).

Job: "I need thumbnails, slides, or social graphics"
Use Canva. The free plan covers most solo creators; upgrade only when you need brand kits or background removal every week. We do not have a live Canva partner link, so this is a plain link and we earn nothing from it.
If you do two jobs, here is the stack
| You are a… | Buy | Ballpark / mo (annual) | Guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTuber or podcaster who also posts Shorts | Descript + Opus Clip or Vizard | ~$30 | Video & voice stack |
| Course creator | Descript, Murf, or Synthesia (by format) | ~$14–$35 | Course creator stack |
| Faceless channel | ElevenLabs + one clipper | ~$20 | Faceless YouTube stack |
| Blogger or SEO freelancer | Frase + Originality.ai | ~$52 | SEO research stack |
| Tight budget, everything | Free tiers + one paid clipper | ~$15 | Repurposing under $50 |

The rule that saves the most money
One job, one tool, one month. If the tool did not save you real hours or make you real money in 30 days, cancel it before the annual renewal. Most creator tool bills are too high because of tools bought for a job they do not do yet. When you are not sure you need anything, read when not to buy AI video tools.
How we put this together
Prices come from each vendor's published pricing page as recorded in our dated pricing guides (last check Sep 28, 2026). The buy/skip calls are judgment based on what each plan includes and who it is built for. We are not claiming a lab test of every tool. Treat the plan math as the reliable part and confirm the price on the vendor's page before you subscribe. For the full list of tools we track, see the tools directory.
Frequently asked questions
What is the one AI tool most creators should buy first?
There is no universal first buy. Buy for the job that eats the most hours this week. If you edit long video or podcasts, that is Descript. If you already have finished videos and need Shorts, that is one clipper (Opus Clip or Vizard). If you need narration without recording yourself, that is ElevenLabs Starter. If none of those is a weekly job yet, buy nothing and use free tiers.
Do I need both Opus Clip and Vizard?
No. They do the same job: turn a long master into short clips. Pick one. Both list a $14.50/mo annual plan on our Sep 28, 2026 check. Vizard publishes a higher starting credit floor; Opus Clip has a $15/mo monthly-only Starter on-ramp. Paying for both is the most common overbuy we see in creator stacks.
ElevenLabs or Murf for adding a voice?
ElevenLabs Starter (about $5/mo annual, $6 monthly) is the cheap default for narration, ads, cold opens, and voice cloning. Murf Creator (about $19/mo annual) fits slide-based lessons and presentations where you want a studio timeline and Canva support. Buy one, not both.
Is ChatGPT enough for SEO writing, or do I need Frase?
ChatGPT is enough for drafting. Frase earns its ~$39/mo (annual Starter) only when search traffic is the business and you publish several posts a month that need SERP-backed briefs and decay audits. If you publish once a month, skip it.
Should I pay for an AI avatar tool like Synthesia?
Only if your audience does not need your face. Synthesia Starter (about $14/mo annual) fits scripted training, onboarding, and explainer lessons. If people follow you as a person, film yourself and edit in Descript instead.
How much should a solo creator spend on AI tools per month?
Most solo creators doing one job well land between $15 and $55 a month: one editor or one clipper, plus one voice tool if needed. Use the cost calculator to add up a real mix before you subscribe, and confirm prices on vendor pages because plans change often.
